Line By Line Lyrics

1970, 1970
1970, 1970

Naci un dia de junio
I was born one day in June

Del año 77
In the year ’77

Planeta mercurio
Planet Mercury

Y el año de la serpiente
And the year of the snake

Sin o patente
Without a patent

Tatuado y en mi frente
Tattooed and on my forehead

Que en el vientre de mi madre
In my mother’s stomach

Marcaba el paso siguiente
Marked the next phase

Me hace llorar
It makes me cry

Sin anestesia en la camilla
Without anesthesia on the stretcher

Mi padre solo dijo es Ana Maria
My dad only said it’s Ana Maria

Si sería el primer llanto
If it would be the first cry

Que me probaría
That I would try

Quemando las heridas
Burning the wounds

Y dandome la bateria
And giving myself the drums

Solia ser entonces como un libro abierto
I used to be then like an open book

Pero leí la letra pequeña del texto
But I read the small print on the text,

Como un arquitecto
Like an architect

Construyendo cada efecto
Constructing each effect

Correcto, incorrecto, sé aprender todo al respecto
Correct, incorrect, I know how to learn everything regarding

Saber que algunas personas
Knowing that some people

Queran el daño
Want damage

Subir peldaño
Step up

Toma tiempo toma año
Take time, take a year

Con mi peluche mirando lo cotidiano
With my teddy looking at the everyday.

Dibujos transformaban
Drawings transformed

Y el invierno en gran verano
And the winter in great summer

Papa me regalo bajo mi insistenso
Papa gave me, with my insistence,

Juego, trataba de culparte y recibencia
A game, it was about blame and [receiving?]

Pero en el cartu hicieron la competencia
But in the [cartu] they made competence

Y fue cuando senti mi primera impotencia
And it was when i felt my first impotence

1970 shhh
1970 shhh
1970 shhh

1977 no me digan no
1977 don’t tell me no

Que uno lo preciente
That one foresees

Todo lo que cambia lo hara diferente
All that changes, that would one would do differently

En el año que nacio la serpien shhh (bis)
The year in which the serpent was born shhh (bis)

Mi adolescencia
My adolescence

Fue una etapa bizarra
Was a strange stage

El cuerpo es bateria
The body is a drum set

Y la cabeza guitarra
And the head, a guitar

La orquesta narronato
The orchestra [narronato]

Nada quebrada para la mirada
Nothing broke the gaze

De una niña que solo talla espadas
Of a girl who only sizes swords

Hormona disparada
Hormone shot

Sobre poblada sin formas
About the population without a shape

En que cambian temporadas
In which the seasons change

Caminas en crucijadas
Roads on crossroads

Cada cual es su morada
Each one of which is her home

Preparaba la carnada
She prepared the bait

La sagrada diablada
The sacred cursed

De mirada encabronada
Looking pissed

Mi fila la verdad
My line, the truth

Nunca busco su silla
Never searched for her seat

Mi busqueda fue mero
My search was a mere

Proceso de pura pila
Process of pure battery

Pupila de poeta
Pupil of the poet

Que marco nuestra saliba
That marked our spit

En la cordillera que miraba la salida
In the range that looked to the exit

La parada militar de paso monotono
The military parade in monotone step

Colores policromolos
Polychromatic colors

Uniformes de poco tono
Uniforms of little tone

Detono mi cuestionamento
Detonate my question

La voz si sono no
The voice, if it sounded or not

Mi primera rima que sono
My first rhyme that sounded

Y me enrrolo
And wrapped me up

Mi busqueda no fue para mi cosa de escenario
For me, my search wasn’t a matter of scene

Fue algo necesario
It was something necessary

Que marcaba ya mi fallo
That already marked my failure

Asi que todas
So everything

Más de lo necesario
More than necessary

Fue cuando entendi
Was when I understood

Que todos quieren ser corsario.
That everyone wants to be a pirate

1970 shhh
1970 shhh
1970 shhh

1977 no me digan no
1977 don’t tell me no

Que uno lo preciente
That one foresees

Todo lo que cambia lo hara diferente
All that changes, that one would do differently

En el año que nacio la serpien shhh (bis)
The year in which the serpent was born shhh (bis)

Reaction to the Overreaction: Psy feat. Snoop Dog – Hangover

Ok, so a lot of flames are stirring already around this song and it has been less than a full day since its release. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at the comment section on YouTube.

People are up in arms, thinking that this is encouraging drinking. On the contrary, I believe the message is far from encouragement. Firstly, Psy is known for his outrageous persona in his music. This doesn’t however mean that his videos should be blown off or disregarded, but rather that his messages are far from straight forwards and are often portrayed with his trademark satirical twist. Need proof? Take a closer look at his two more recent hits “Gangnam Style” and “Gentlemen” both of which make fun of what is in their titles.

Gangnam District in Seoul is known for it’s elevated (and expensive) style trends which he pokes fun at with his outrageous videos and lyrics.  Gentleman also does the same, making fun of the gentleman ideal which is far from what most people follow. (Take a look at lyrics and translations for Gangnam Style and Gentleman).

South Korea has a huge drinking culture. There are a lot of codes around proper drinking and it often happens on formal occasions as well as with close friends. For some of the basics, take a look at EatYourKimchi’s seven steps to drinking properly here. Seoulistic also points out that South Korean drinking etiquette often leads to over-consumption.

Combine Psy’s satirical style and information on the drinking culture, it is a lot easier to flip the coin to see that he is not encouraging over-consumption and lack of self-controlled drinking. Rather, it is a comment on what it leads to. Getting wasted and mass public misbehavior from over-drinking is not desirable. The whole video displays the absurdity that can happen afterwards from it. How is that encouragement to drink? What do you think?

The best part about art is that it can be interpreted in many ways. So please, before making a judgement on artistic works that have underlying symbolism, do a little research rather than going to arms and condemning it.
